How the Regents curve works

Your raw score — the credits you earn — is converted to a scaled score out of 100 using a chart NYSED sets separately for each administration. The conversion is not linear: near the passing line, a single extra raw credit can lift your scaled score by several points. That is why the raw score needed for a 65 drifts from exam to exam, and why practicing to bank every credit matters. These calculators use the most recent published charts (June 2026); use them as a close estimate, and always confirm with your official score report.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Regents curve?

Each Regents exam has a conversion chart, set separately for every administration, that turns your raw score (credits earned) into a scaled score out of 100. Because that chart is not a straight percentage, students call it the curve.

How is a Regents score calculated?

You earn raw credits, then NYSED's conversion chart for that exam and administration maps your raw total to a scaled score. A 65 scaled is passing and 85 is mastery, but the raw score needed for each changes every administration.

What raw score do I need to pass the Regents?

It depends on the exam and administration. On the June 2026 Algebra I exam, for example, 29 raw credits converted to a scaled 65. Pick your subject calculator to see the exact number.
